รู้หรือไม่ ประเทศอะไรต้องมี the นำหน้า

เชื่อว่าหลายคนคงรู้ว่า the ใช้ในกรณีพูดถึงสิ่งที่เฉพาะเจาะจง เช่น  Ann sat down on the chair nearest the door. แอนนั่งลงบนเก้าอี้ที่อยู่ใกล้หน้าต่างที่สุด (รู้ว่าตัวไหนไม่ต้องเดา)

 

the ใช้ในหลายกรณี แต่ที่แน่ๆ เราไม่ใช้ the กับชื่อคน ในทำนองเดียวกัน เราไม่ใช้ the กับชื่อสถานที่ เช่น

 

ทวีป :     Africa        ไม่ใช่     the Africa

ประเทศ :    Japan    ไม่ใช่     the Japan

รัฐ ภูมิภาค ฯลฯ :     Texas    ไม่ใช่     the Texas

เกาะ :      Sicily        ไม่ใช่     the Sicily

เมือง :     Madrid      ไม่ใช่     the Madrid

ภูเขา :     Everest     ไม่ใช่    the Everest

 

อย่างไรก็ตาม เราใช้  "the" กับ ประเทศหรือรัฐ ดังต่อไปนี้

 

Republic / Kingdom / States ฯลฯ เช่น

 

the United States of America (the USA) สหรัฐอเมริกา

the United Kingdom (the UK) สหราชอาณาจักร

the Czech Republic สาธารณรัฐเช็ก

the Netherlands ราชอาณาจักรเนเธอร์แลนด์

the Philippines สาธารณรัฐ ฟิลิปปินส์

ฯลฯ
